CARBON REDUCTION PROGRAMME

Going green. Good for business.

We’ve all heard the debate about global warming. However, whichever side of the fence, or hemisphere, you sit on there are two undisputable facts:

Fact 1 – Global emissions have risen by almost 50% in the past 20 years, and they are still rising.

Fact 2 – Energy prices, emissions taxes and levies have all risen dramatically in recent years, and the total energy costs will continue to rise for the foreseeable future.

For every year in which emission continue to rise, scientists tell us that we have increasingly less chance of keeping the rise in global temperature to less than 2C – beyond this scientists say climate change becomes irreversible and catastrophic.  Therefore, governments across the globe are attempting (with differing levels of commitment, accepted) to 'incentivise' businesses to reduce energy consumption and emissions.

At home, many of us are already living greener and leaner. We recycle, turn down thermostats, insulate roofs, turn off lights, watch petrol prices rise with growing concern, and worry about how far our food has travelled.

However, in business, manufacturing and the Public Sector, the stakes are much higher. If an organisation is using more than 6,000MWh per year of electricity (equal to an annual electricity bill of approximately £500,000), an 80% reduction in lighting energy usage represents a huge saving.

In addition, any organisations using this much power in the UK is obliged to buy allowances from the Government every year to cover their emissions in the previous year, under the CRC Energy Efficiency scheme. Lowering your energy usage may be the difference between having to join the CRC or not, and giving you a cost advantage over your competitors either way.

Businesses are also under pressure from supply-chain obligations and consumers to reduce their carbon footprint as part of a comprehensive carbon reduction programme. A ‘green’ statement and plan is now an impressive and compelling marketing tool, with considerable financial advantage.

A business decision.

One of the benefits of a carbon reduction programme designed by BLE Energy, is that we calculate the ‘pay-back period’ for the cost of upgrading your existing lighting solution. This is basically how long it will take to recoup the initial installation & purchasing costs from the savings made with lower energy bills. Very often, this period is less than two years. After which time, an organisation enjoys lower energy bills and maintenance costs year on year. At the moment, with low interest rates, this can often make more sense than keeping money in the bank.
